My thoughts on the last class session-class 1

One of the things that made my think considerably was the argument that after the 60’s there was transition from modernity to post-modernity which have resulted in a declining of church attendance because we have interpreted the Gospel with modern lenses. That points out the need for the Church to find a way in the post-modern context. I agree with the fact that the Church cannot expect that people will change their culture to find God. Furthermore, I believe it is impossible for anyone to “get rid” of the his/her culture to embrace a new one because it is embedded so deeply in our worldview and social structures that a person will feel a huge conflict (tension) constantly that will be almost unbearable. As the professor said in class, if there is a disconnection between the Jesus of the culture and the Church, there is a problem; the Church will become useless and even hinder people’s search for God and for ways to practice their spirituality. The Church has to stop being in the business of filling huge and costly buildings with people and open up to serve the community where they are at (reaching out) through social justice programs. The worship expressions have to change to meet the needs of a new generation how is moved by different elements. However, I believe (as result of my personal experience in church) this is not an easy change because the Christians are the ones who usually resist the change and insist in being countercultural as if it is a sign of being “separated form the world”. The Church needs to be educated to see this change as initiated by the Holy Spirit who act in us and give us the wisdom to facilitate his work in the world. Do you find this valuable?
